The Dexter Historical Society’s Grist Mill Museum opened for its 40th season on June 14. Amanda Pullen has returned as intern. She and curator Richard Whitney have installed a display featuring the Dexter High School class of 1957, for their fiftieth reunion year. Whitney is working on cleaning and polishing a wood cookstove for the kitchen room recently donated by Peter Prescott It was made by Wood Bishop in Bangor for sale by H.L. Tillson in Dexter. Recent acquisitions include the football from the 1951 football team and photos of ice racing, with horses and sulkies, on Lake Wassookeag. Both the Grist Mill and the Abbott Museum and Gift Shop are open summer hours, Monday through Saturday from 10 to 4, 1 to 4 Saturday for the Grist Mill. The society is presenting a special program this summer to celebrate the 40th year of the Grist Mill Museum. It is a discussion series, "I Remember…” which will meet on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings through July and August. The first topic will be memories of the World War II era, from the point of view of both the experiences of the soldiers and activities on the homefront, such as work at Fay-Scott. All are encouraged to attend, to share their memories or to listen and learn. This meeting will be on July 11 at 7:00 PM at the Abbott Museum. For further information call 924-5721. |
