DEXTER - The former Abbott Mill office is getting a new face. Donated to the Dexter Historical Society by Guilford of Maine summer 2001, the building has been named the Abbott Museum and will house a museum store and gift shop, research center, and conference room as well as several new exhibit areas. Robert Miller and his crew are working to restore the front of the building to its appearance in 1898. At that time the building was used as a warehouse on the Church Street level with offices on the lower level. Photographs show a plain exterior with a central double door flanked by a single 12 over 8 pane window on each side and one in the gable. The old clapboards have been removed and will be replaced with new ones that have been pre-stained red. Clapboards and windows will be replaced on the remaining three sides as soon as possible. A drive was begun last year to raise the necessary funds for the renovation work and has been successful in generating about half the desired amount. Sponsorship of interior rooms is offered at $5,000 apiece and individual levels of donation to the project are set at $1,000, $500, $250 and $100 with names to be placed on a donor board in the completed museum.
