An advertisement for Dr. Orrin Fitzgerald Jr., a spiritualist healer in Dexter from the time of the Civil War until his death in 1897. Orrin came to Dexter at the age of five from Caanan, Maine. Very early on his parents noticed his unusual spiritual powers, which were an embarrassment to the family, and they shipped young Orrin off to the "wilds of Garland" to live with a spiritualist by the name of Jonathan Lawrence. Under Jonathan's tutelage, Orrin learned to control his unusual abilities. The spirit that controlled his body was an Indian spirit by the name of William Lybush, and it stayed with Orrin all his life. Upon making a diagnosis, Orrin would go into a trance and the Indian spirit would effect the cure. When he came out from under the influence of the spirit, the doctor would always ask, "What did the Indian tell you?" Dr. Fitzgerald bottled his Improved Invigorator and a Membrane Cure in a laboratory on lower Main Street on the site of Gary's Garage today. He also maintained a medical home in Allston, Massachusetts, and spent time between both places. This advertisement was printed in The Eastern State newspaper, a Dexter weekly paper started and owned by Dr. Fitzgerald in 1888 in the Advent Building on the corner of Pleasant and Main Streets.
