Elijah Sprague was induced by offers of land to bring his blacksmithing talents to the "French district" of Dexter in 1803. His son, Volney Sprague (1817-1908), practiced as a lawyer in Dexter for twenty-six years; perhaps his best service, however, was in recording verbal history of Dexter's history, which he wrote up over the years to give us much of what we now know of Dexter's past.
