Built in 1866 by Loring Hayes, the Exchange Hotel stood for many years between Main Street and the post office. It had many owners in its time but none more colorful than Del Cleveland and his dog Grover. The story goes that local folk at the Exchange would flip a nickel into Grover's mouth and open the door. Grover would run to Jim Kerby's store, where Jim would take the nickel and place a package of lozenges in his mouth. Grover would then faithfully run back to the hotel and deposit his package to the delight of all present, who would then give Grover one for his reward.
