A c. 1900 photograph of Gershom L. Gould's hay press and crew on lower Main Street. The hay press was run by two horses on a treadmill (at the rear of the press). Mr. Gould was an extensive purchaser and shipper of baled hay, shipping to points all across the east and south. He operated two modern hay presses that had a combined capacity of 20 to 25 tons per day. His storehouse, located on the Maine Central Railroad, had a capacity of 1,000 tons, and by 1904 he shipped out 4,000 tons of baled hay annually. In addition to the hay press business, Gershom also was a truckman, doing heavy trucking for companies such as Fay & Scott.
