A portrait of Maria Jennings Keene, who left a very detailed account of her family's arduous trek up the Kenduskeag River from Castine as they traveled inland to their new home in Elkinstown (Dexter). Along the way Maria found herself shoeless when they were burned by a pisplaced hot kettle. Maria spoke often of how she, her five brothers, and the neighboring children were shoeless in the central Maine wilderness, a great irony since her father was a cobbler.
