"The flat", Dexter's Main Street as it appeared in 1892. Of special nite is the large flag draped over Main Street, which was a common practice during political campaigns. At the top of the flag are the names Harrison and Reid: Benjamin Harrison was running for reelection as President on the Republican ticket, and Thomas Reid was the highly-respected Republican Speaker of the House in Congress. In 1892 Main Street was still unpaved and board sidewalks were in evidence. The Bank Block, the four-story building on the left side of Main Street, still had its mansard roof in 1892. A fire four years later burned the top stories of the building, and it was rebuilt to its present configuration. Also visible in the photograph are overhead electrical wires. By 1892 Dexter had electricity; for five years it was supplied by the Dexter Electric Light & Power Company., which generated the power from a waterwheel in the planing mill of the Eldridge Brothers shop on Grove Street.
