This cottage was built in 1888 by Frank Hayes at Waldheim. Waldheim, a summer colony begun in 1883 on the shores of Lake Wassookeag by nine Dexter men, is still in existance today. In its heyday there was a beach and boat dock, a bowling alley, a tennis court, a pavilion for dances and plays, and an ice house so the residents could make ice cream. The cottage shown here was later owned for thirty years by Harold Small, owner of the Grist Mill. It was next door to one his father and then sister owned. Several generations of children and their parents have had many wonderful summers in this "big happy family".
